View Full Version : HDD Test Utility

Is there a programme available that runs under WinXP that will test a USB HDD for errors?

I would like one with a end report of Bad Sectors - MBR – SMART etc. as opposed to Passed - Failed for the complete test.

I tried Seatools, but a lot of the tests I want to run come up as “Unavailable”?

Probably be better if you remove the hdd and put it in the case. Or connect it outside the case. Then test it

agree with speedy, since the drive is operating off the USB controller, not the SATA or IDE controller the program may not be able to get certain information and/or certain diagnostic functions could be unavailable

That's just the point, it is a USB Drive without any facilities to connect to IDE or SATA as far as I know?

Just found This software (http://hddscan.com/) - its free, and does scan a USB drive.

Just trying it now, and it located and is doing a surface scan on a 160GB USB drive.

not sure, i won't say much more, don't want to take over this thread. but the window never opens, process starts, gets to around 8400k and stops. left it for about 10 mins but it just sat there. not able to poke around and see whats happening now, ill try later tonight maybe.

One thing I did find with that program, it wouldn't run from a USB drive, but if I copied the extracted folder over to the desktop, then it worked.
