ok here's my situation...so im running off of windows xp home edition, a few weeks ago i did a system restore all the way back to may b/c i thought i could find a deleted document that i needed, ok so that worked all went well but couldnt find the document. so i then did another system restore to a later date in june...all of a sudden when restarting i get this error msg: this application has failed to start b/c WININET.dll was not found. Re-installing may fix the problem and i get sometimes urlmon.dll not found and to re-install may fix the problem too. now i have only a wallpaper to stare at, no icons, no start menu, but i know how to use the task manager by ctrl+alt+del but im so lost on what to do. so ive looked everywhere on the web for solutions and fixes i tried to follow everything to the best of my knowledge and nothing is working, ugghhhh. im getting frustrated haha! please, someone willing to help me out, step by step please, would be greatly appreciated! thx!

ps...i have no recovery discs

you might be able to get some functions back by clicking File > New Task (Run..) in task manager and type Explorer.exe into the box that pops up.

Otherwise I'd suggest going into safe mode and doing a virus/spyware scan.

Open task manager then go to run task. Type explorer.exe. Does the desktop / any icons appear then?

Something is damaged by the looks of it. You'll need something to fix it or reinstall it

Well normally I would pull the hard drive out and put it in a working computer to retrieve/backup files then reinstall windows, but since you don't have a disk, which you could also try a 'repair with' I don't think there's much more you can do.

Can you not beg/borrow one?

can a person just go out and buy windows xp and reinstall? would that work?

yes it would.

If you want you can get Ubuntu linux which is free, you can download or send away for a disk.

even if its a black screen right now, i can put in the disc and it will have an option to install...cuz i have no start menu no icons no nothing haha

yep, you will put the disc in, reboot, and then press any key to boot from disc and follow the instructions from there. You may have to change setting inthe bios to boot from cd first before booting from the hard drive.

You will have to pay for Xp, but if you want Ubuntu then read:
