Dell Dimension E521
Windows Vista Home 32bit

Attempted downloaded AVG v9

lost ability to connect to internet through lan
- checked lan setting: all automatic
- checked internet options: all automatic
- uninstalled network device, reboot, reinstall: no change
- downloaded network device driver installed: no change
- installed a USB to Lan adapter: same result - no connection
- uninstalled AVG 8.5
- reset Winsock: no change
- installed Microsoft Security Essentials - couldn't scan because it wasn't updated
- installed Malwarebytes, scanned & removed multiple infections
still no internet connection

error on the lan device:
The network adapter “Broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller” is experiencing driver or hardware related issues.

any suggestions accepted

Where did the drivers for the NIC come from?? CD or from the site? It sounds like its either knackered, or the drivers are stuffed / corrupt. What was it infected with?? Did you disable system restore first?

I would agree with this other than the fact that I tried an usb to lan connection & got the same results/error

What was it infected with??
Did you disable system restore first? Yes

Use trojan remover (somehow), get the update from the site, then scan. Then select all options under utilities menu. See what happens. Boot into safe mode / networking. See if that works / gets it on the net

I wonder if it's a firewall or Norton Security issue (if installed)...

Trojan Remover didn't change anything.
There are remnants of ZoneAlarm & ZoneAlarm Spyblocker Toolbar.
I have uninstalled ZoneAlarm

looks live ZoneAlarm was the culprit.
Thank you
