Often when we boot up, just before the decktop is diplayed we get a blue screen of death. An error in 'VXD' and some numbers. The computer freezes and i cannot folow the instructuons on screen. The computer has been reformatted and all application reloaded in order to eliminate this, but it was unsucessful. Could it be a hardware problem and is which one?

If its a hardware problem, then it will probably be faulty RAM.

Luckily its very cheap currently. You can get 128MB for ~$60, just don't get the really cheap stuff that doesn't come with a warranty.

also physically removing all cards, memory and the cpu, and then reseating them can sometimes fix the prob.

Try entering the error message into (e.g.) Google.com search engine. I did this and was surprised that within a few seconds I was reading the help page (from Norton's) that explained the error message.
