ISP: Orcon

And yes, it does vary. my first ever pingtest gave a MOS F followed (within 1min) by a D and then an A. Usual average is about MOS A 2ms Jitter 0% pkt loss

Just proves how crap telecom is really. However my friend is on iHug and has a download speed of 20kb/s, he called them and they said that it should be 256kb/s so they said it was where he was living. The neighbors are on the same plan at the correct speed .

I'm with Telecom icow, yet I fail to see anything wrong with it? There's the likely probability it's more to do with your local exchange, home wiring, and your broadband modem.

Apparently you've not seen the constant issues Ihug / Vodafone have with their email servers ;)

Welcome to the forum jerom .... pingtest is also free.

What I would like to ask is .... why aren't we comparing ping/speeds from UK, USA etc .... surely we do more "surfing / gaming" on overseas sites ???

After seeing everyones results decided to carry out the test myself and having done so I wonder about the validity of the pingtest, net results. I first did the speed test to see if Telstra was delivering the advertised speed increase. No problems here as I got a speed of 15.24Mb/s down 2.14Mb/s up
Then proceeded to do a series of ping tests through pingtest.net which consistently gave results of 88% packet loss and a variable ping time of 30-40 m/s The large 88% packet loss did not seem consistent with my real life web browsing experience. However as suggested I rang the Telstra help desk and to my surprise within 2 minutes I was speaking to a live person. With the help desk's assistance I ran a series of speed and ping tests independent of speed /pingtest.net A completely different picture emerged My speed actually increased to 16.2Mb/s down and 2.5Mb/s up with zero packet loss and a ping time of 3m/s.
