Are the RGB LED screens much better than standard LED screens? A friend of my father was telling me she bought a high end Sony laptop because the salesperson raved on about how great the RGB screens are for photographers, but Debbie found the colours were less accurate than her old computer.

I'm having trouble finding a good explanation but I think the reason it is supposed to be better quality is it produces a truer white colour than standard LED backlights - is that correct?

The RGB LED backlit displays use three separate diodes (red, green, blue) to produce white light, contrary to the standard (white) LED ones which use one, usually a blue diode covered with phosphor. They have significantly larger color space/gamut compared to standard white LED and CCFL backlight displays used in notebooks and will produce much more saturated (deeper, more natural) colors.
