View Full Version : Google blocked

Since booting up this morning everything with "Google" in the URL address seems to be blocked. Operate with Internet Explorer and Safari. Both return a blank screen for any entered Google URL, but OK with any other. Have entered every address in my list which includes the name Google and all return a blank screen. Yahoo comes up OK, but all entries for Google in that engine won't respond. In fact have spent most of this morning trying to nut out a way to bypass the block, but with no success so far. My GMail account is also not accessible of course.

Have made the obvious checks with security and privacy in IE and the equivalent in Safari. Have made google.com and google.co.nz "always allow". Temporarily made my virus software inactive. Tried to contact my ISP, Vodafone, but no contact as yet. Saturdays can be hopeless so gave up. Will keep trying of course. But surely they couldn't be intimidated into setting up a block without informing me?. I've heard that in extreme cases of convictions for porno etc providers can be ordered to institute blocks, but I'm not into that sort of garbage.

In my 10 years of computing have never encountered anything similar to this, so would really appreciate any comments.

Try downloading Google Chrome and see what happens .... just out of interest.

Several things could be blocking it.

Try this -- Open a command Prompt - type in ping google.com Hit enter -- does google reply ?

Secondly -
Have made the obvious checks with security Please say what you have checked, as sometimes what may seem obvious is actually missed - What OS you are using.

PS: welcome to PF1 :)

Check you windows hosts file in a text editor, if you have not already, for any strange entries:

For Windows NT/2000/XP Pro : c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts or c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

and for Windows XP Home: c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

About hosts files. (http://accs-net.com/hosts/what_is_hosts.html) I think it should at least read localhost; Their could be other entries relating to Google causing blockage- Some people block Google ads by editing the hosts file. There is plenty of online info relating to hosts file and maybe what the ip entries relate to. Maybe there is some invalid entries/adware or similar.

I had my Google adsense account blocked, along with many other NZ's a few weeks back, but I think that was due to a domain server redirect that Google was implementing. Had to replace the 'NZ" with "UK" in the url to activate it.

Thanks guys for all your helpful comments. Got home from watching my grandson win his football team's match almost singlehanded -- :clap -- started to follow through on your suggestions. After a successful ping thought to try a Google address one more time and Bingo!! All's now back to normal. No idea why which is a bit frustrating. At least I can now understand the Chinese Google deprivation syndrome! If it happens again I have your suggestions to hand. Thanks again.

It wasn't just you.

Around 7am Saturday I was getting the same issue. Zilch from Google, with other sites seeming to be ok.
