I have found a file in my notebook (running win 98) that is called confgsfe. I contains a file called qcinit that occupies about 400meg of hardrive space. In this are zipped files of a lot of applications and software that I have used previously. What is this and can I delete it to recover the space?

Just a guess but it may be your restore disk.

Its the manufacturers way of getting the MS software cheaper if it will only work on the computer it was sold on.

If it is then if you delete it then you wont be able to restore your OS etc if you have to (unless you have another copy on CD). Your lucky, I saw a compaq laptop where 1.7Gb of a 4Gb disk was wasted with the restore disk.
