Hi all,

My parents want a new laptop and have a budget of $1000. They need it for web browsing, email and iTunes etc.

I currently like the look of the Toshiba Sat Pro L500 (http://ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=389227) but am open to other options.

What kind of laptop would suit their needs (preferably Asus or Toshiba :))?

I think any laptops will do IMO. Perhaps they prefer a larger screen? The i series CPU are on the more pricey side, perhaps a P4-M series is it? Celeron would do too but some people may not like it :D
The linked one looks sweet.

Bro is on a similar boat, migrating from a PC (!).
No experience with ASUS, Toshiba is good I think, Thinkpads great too but more corporate than Joe/Jane consumers. They also use them in Space and Daytona :p Plus Omega (!).

We run all Toshiba's, both for business and personal use, never had a issue.

The Toshiba L500, we are running one, it is on and off planes, packed and unpacked, turned on and off near enough every day and has never missed a beat.

I got my daughter a L500 and have had no issues with it..I have a Sat for circa 2002 still running fine on the original P4M 1.9...
The linked unit looks great for the price, builtin webcam and mic, lots of RAM, new O/s, sweet laptop, great battery life would be the only knock...2-3hrs max!

1 grand looks like a sweet deal. Some other makers may ask for $1200.

But this looks like a swell one :p

Bought my wife a L500 about a 18 months ago. No problems at all. Wouldn't buy an Acer though..

for what your parents want to do with it, $1000 should go a long way. Just dont get one from an electronics store, got to the manufacturers website or trademe, youll still get all the features and warranty/support that you would from an electronics store, and at a lesser price.
I looked on trademe for 2 weeks finding the right laptop for me, and eventually scored a bargain for less than $1000. (specs below)

Acer is a swear word, Asus/Toshiba is preferred, Sony's and Compaq's/HP's are good too

whats wrong with acer?

Acer rates worst for reliability. Some people have not had any issues but basically they consist of cheap components and buying one is a gamble to see how long they will last without a repair.

I heard they are the same, just not the Idea series..
The X and T series still gets a substantial price on TM 3yrs used.

I still have a 2000 X series working now, bought 1yr used, screen just went bad earlier this year. Had 3 other laptops, 2 were also IBM. I bought a X series tablet off TM recently, that's my 4 of the 5. Bro may want a T series with a larger series (the X has no DVD so it's the thinnest), T has a DVD so next on the list.

Was the drive made by Toshiba though?
