View Full Version : Turning a monitor into a light?

This idea may sound ridiculous but is it possible?

Is it possible to turn a monitor into a light. By this I mean. Plug monitor into wall, have it NOT connected to computer, turn the on button on and it glows a white or other coloured light?

I know this will require some modificaton to the monitor which I am happy to do. I realise that voltages etc may be stored in the monitor.

I also realise it is somewhat energy ineficient

Ideally this is a zero cost project. The existing monitor I have is crt

Anyt idea on how to do this, as crazy as it sounds?

It would be inneficcient, you could replace the gun with a bulb but the glass would likely implode if you tried to cut in to it.

use LCD (if you really have to make a light) i am doubting a CRT will work. take the LCD crystal out leaving the diffusers/endlighten/cold cathode tube and hook it up to an inverter that will pump enought juice to power it.

Then sell the LCD bit and the rest of the monitor to someone who wants it (like me)
