I just thought you'd like a little light reading for the start of the week.

Tammany Hall (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tammany_hall) was a very corrupt political society in the US - 'way long ago but the idea lives on ------>

Now it's a little, tiny city (City Of Bell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell,_California) ~ population=36,664) of about 80% welfare recipients and the rest are illegal - oops, make that: 'displaced tourists' who don't have much of any income either.

Recently radio station KFI has blown the lid on some unbelievable corruption.

From the LA Times article: (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-bell-benefits-20100808,0,1450972.story?track=rss&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+latimes%2Fnews%2Flocal+%28L.A .+Times+-+California+|+Local+News%29&utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher)

Here's a short c/p:

Former Bell City Manager Robert Rizzo, whose $787,637 ($1,076,156 NZD) salary prompted widespread outrage, received an unusually lucrative package of benefits that increased his annual compensation to more than $1.5 million ($2,049,465 NZD), according to Bell City records reviewed by The Los Angeles Times.

Rizzo's benefits package for this year, which covers time off, retirement and medical and other types of insurance, shows he was entitled to vacation and sick leave that totaled more than 28 weeks a year.

Bell's interim city attorney said Saturday that Rizzo's compensation package raised serious questions and that the city planned to investigate who approved the perks and whether they are legal.

"It appears Rizzo was getting an inordinate amount of hours of vacation and sick benefits and being paid for it," said James Casso of the law firm Meyers Nave. "We're looking to see when it was approved, whether it was approved at a City Council meeting and who approved it."

Called 'Ratzo-Rizzo' now, the whole city council is rife with illegal activities.

The rest of the council members were aghast at the amount the Ratzo was getting, and they were most likely ashamed that they weren't getting theirs too!

The final kick in the groin?

ibid: ... there is evidence Rizzo's deal was exorbitant."
