Hi Guys

I have Avast 4.8 and am thinking about going to 5.00

Have many of you upgraded to 5.00

Has Avast gone like AVG and gone to bloatware ?

Or is Version 5 good.

Please don't mention other software, Id like to stick with Avast.

v5 is way better in every way apart from actually detecting and removing malware. It's the same as 4.8 there. Just wondering what your reason for wanting to stick with Avast is?

Using Avast 5, I like the boot scan it can do (though slow), as it found a few damaged files on my PC. Though Avast 5 has plenty of expert settings, under various categories, it perhaps gives a piece of mind that it is comprehensive, or maybe more than what's required; Not sure though; for example it has "PUP" to select for scanning unwanted/suspicious files, whatever they mean by that.

Odd we use MSSE on 4 desktops and a laptop none are gaming machines just standard computers that I built and none of them hang when updating

Wouldn't be surprised if ZA is the cause

I have had no problems with Avast 5

Dump ZA - it is a PITA. Windows Fire Wall is sufficient on its own.

+1 on the ZA comments. From my point of view it went bad at least 3 years ago. Get rid.

Thanks guys
So it looks like in summary....

There are no major problems with Avast 4.8 or 5.00
No one likes Zone Alarm anymore.
Some of you think that Microsoft Firewall is OK.

Personally I have never liked any of Microsoft's utilities. They are usually bloated and ineffective. Which I s why other third party apps are made. Their previous anti-virus attempts were low grade third party apps they bought and changed the name of. And they make the OS which has all the loop holes in it !
