What is this RAID Edition, actually? Just a sales gimmick?

No, they are designed to run 24x7 in vibration prone environments, have a higher MTBF, they also have slightly better performance than your run of the mil hard drives and much longer warranties.

The main difference is that RAID edition supports TLER and the standard ones don't.

Used to be you could "unlock" the standard drives and turn them into RAID editions with TLER but Western Digital soon found out and made it impossible.

Western Digital don't say anything about performance or reliablity differences even on their own website:

I wasn't aware of that, Seagate most definitely make a big deal about performance and reliability differences with RE drives...

Well, they probably have longer warranty and *should* be built to a higher standard too.
