... without enabling "Navigation Bar" to be present? I am trying to make the Firefox browser as compact as possible so that I get a larger web page viewing space.

Cheers :)

The address bar is the Navigation bar. You can't type anything into what is not there.

Other answer is to Bookmark all URLs and get them from there.

This functionality can also be accessed via File>>Open Location.

Move the location bar and the google bar to the same level as the menu.

Move the bookmarks to the same level as the back / forward / home buttons

Remove the bookmarks toolbar.

Also thanks Erayd. Something else I just learnt.

Incidentally, the same functionality can be found in Opera by pressing F2.

Alt+D should work also

ALT+D is only if you still have the address bar enabled though - it doesn't pop up a box. Same with F8 (or F6 in Firefox).
