View Full Version : LAN Cables

Hi, I organise a Monthly LAN in Dunedin. We don't have our own location so obviously this means we have to set up and pack up each time.

This however has one problem: rolling up and storing all the LAN cables.
Is there a better way? Maybe some sort of magical device that makes it all neat an easy?

Any help with this conundrum would be much appreciated.

How many cables typically, and what length?

Currently about 20-30 between 4 and 12 metres each, however this is getting larger each time. Currently looking at getting a bunch made up by someone from trademe with each length in a different colour of cable.

Make the cables your self, they are easy enough, and you can cut to the desired length you require.

All you need is a roll or two of cable, Some place like Cables Direct (http://www.cablesdirect.co.nz/catalog/entry?entry=315) some RJ45 plugs and a set of crimping tools.

I've made all the ones I have now but I got the roll of trade me for real cheap (300m for $30). That site you linked is really cheap, everywhere else I've seen has been closer to $160 a roll.

Apart from possible latency issues and overloading, why not use wireless? surely that would be cheaper for everyone who didnt have a Wi-Fi card to buy one rather than buting all those cables. certainly less messy. In our dorm we do 12 people over ad-hoc at about 40-80ms latency

Depending on WHAT they do on the LAN, it may work better with Ethernet

Imagine sharing games over a 802.11a network.

That has happened, never let an older computer connect to the ad hoc first, it adapts to the lowest common available standard. Took us about 1/2 and hour to realize that we were running a instead of N, kicked off the 3rd former and restarted our match

Why don't you get everyone to bring their own cable?

Why don't you get everyone to bring their own cable?

Alot of people don't have cables long enough, and we've even had people bringing cables that don't work at all, or don't support 1Gb/s speeds.

Unfortunately wireless doesn't support our speed requirements with file/game sharing etc.

I did see a Youtube tutorial once on how to coil up a power cable so it doesn't tangle. Might work for Ethernet too if you're lucky.

That sounds good I might try have a look for it. The cables I currently have are all CAT6a Solid core with the plastic X brace in the middle of the cable so there quite ridged and hard to coil up.
