hello there everyone, i recentally purchased a secondhand laptop off my brother, a satellite m100 now it started off fine, and just recentally, it's started having issues with playing video and audio, whenever i play audio, streaming off youtube, playing cd's or audio files, it plays okay for a moment and then it very quickly repeats the note of that second, like a strobe effect, and same goes for video, every few seconds it has a strobe effect, it's not my ram, i have 4gigabytes of it, it's not my cpu, my computer is a dual core 1.7ghz, it should be able to stand up to it, and my hard drive is fine, i've plenty of space free, any ideas where to start looking ? (it's not the speakers, also does it with headphones)

Hi Ice

Your Direct Memory Access (DMA) settings have been changed. If this is the case it may indicate impending hard drive failure. Faulty CD/DVD Drives and Discs can cause this too. :groan:

Check it out.
Settings> Control Panel> System> Hardware> Device Manager> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers> Primary IDE Channel>> Advanced Settings

Device 0 and Device 1 should be set to DMA if available.

Scary, but I'm thinking its not that dramatic, does the laptop have a built in webcam + Microphone? it could be that it is set up to "listen to this device", in which case you would have a feedback loop...
Without knowing what OS you have all I can do is point you to sound options located in the control panel, then you need to find the list called recording devices, somewhere in the properties for your microphone you should see a checkbox for "listen to this device" make sure it is unticked (it doesn't need to be ticked pretty much ever, even when you want to use it for MSN)

Every now and again I have a similar problem, although I usually only get it in flash. For me, it happens when background programs are accessing the hard drive a lot. Could you give us a list of processes running?

Hi Ice

Your first link is the correct area. I Use Xp so the earlier instructions were for that but it looks similar, (perhaps someone with Windows 7 could confirm this). Instead of Primary IDE Channel seems you have ATA Channel 0 and ATA Channel 1. Just double click >> on these. This should open up a menu with tabs along the top. As stated in previous post, select Advanced Settings and go from there.

When the going get tough, the tough go home!!
