From time to time, without any obvious link to any other activity, my PC (running Win98) seems to stop talking to the rest of the world. This shows up as not being able to download or upload email in Outlook Express and the following message:

A TCP/IP error occurred while trying to connect to the server... (server information)...Error Number: 0x800CCC15.

Additionally Internet Explorer will not connect to web pages - gives an error page ending with 'Cannot find server or DNS Error.'

Breaking my dial-up connection and reconnecting does not help. The only way to get out of this situation is to re-boot which always works and is a pain the...

My ISP help desk suggested this was a 'TCP/IP stack error' problem but could offer no suggestions.

Any ideas gratefully accepted.

try removing dialup networking from add/remove, then goto the network control panel and remove everything there.

Then reboot and reinstall dialup networking. That may help, but in the past I have found a reinstall (clean) easier.
