There is no need for an antivirus, unless you are planning on downloading things
then sharing them with a Windows machine.
Eset do a BETA version of their NOD32 for Linux if you feel the need.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Firestarter
is the firewall I use.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gufw
is the Ubuntu page for yours

possibly the more knowledgeable Linux types may have other suggestions.

Agreed that Firestarter firewall is good.
As KarameaDave says you do not need a virus scanner to protect a Linux PC - I am not even sure if you need one to be socially responsible - but if you like there is http://www.clamav.net/lang/en/.

Gee, firewall, anti-virus, on Linux? I think you're freed from all that stuff on Linux.

I have had one distro or another on my computer for years, and, as far as I know, have never had any nasties.

Firewalls are needed everywhere. Antivirus on Linux not so much.

Thanks I have installed Firestarter and it seems to be up and running. Not going to bother with AV as consensus seems to suggest it is not necessary. Thanks for all the help :)
