Can you install a Linux O/S on an external hard drive and be able to boot of it? I don't wish to alter the configuration of my laptop and want to retain XP on it. I have a WD external hard drive of 250gig capacity. Currently it has 75gig of free space.

Yes but you will need to repartition it if there is already data on there (unless you do a Wubi install...)

I would suggest you try installing to the laptop with Wubi. It installs inside Windows just like another applicaton, only makes a small change to boot.ini and will remove that change and all files if you wish to uninstall it later.

I don't know how reliable it will be if you install it to an external drive with Wubi. I think it would be best if you installed it to the internal hard drive.
