View Full Version : If Windows update in address bar, page won't load?

Hello.

I'm stumped on this problem and haven't been able to find any solutions.

When it has the windowsupdate url anywhere in the address bar (even part of a google search) windowsupdate.microsoft.com it says "Internet Explorer cannot display the page".

I've installed and run virus scans from:
Malware Bytes
SpyBot: Search and Destory
Super Anti-Spyware
Microsoft Security Essentials.

I then went as far as running combofix.

I've checked the hosts file in system32/drivers/etc and it doesn't have anything referring to windows update, or any plain IP addresses.

It's fine to go anywhere else, but anywhere that has "windowsupdate.microsoft.com" anywhere in the address bar, simply doesn't load.

Any thing else I can try?

So other sites are fine, except the windowsupdate site? What if you select windowsupdate from the menu?

I've been trying to sort a similar problem with Microsoft for 7 weeks
along with thousands of other guys and even upgraded to Win7 only
to find the problem migrated from Vista to 7 in the files transfer. When
I find the time I will have to Format and do a Clean(custom) install.
Hope your problem is not as severe. I am unable to download anything
from microsoft.

Go to tools / internet options / connections. Has something / someone put in a proxy??? If there's anything here untick it. Post a hijackthis. We may see something in that

This may or may not fix it (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058). If there's nothing in the log

You can tick these then tick fix checked. Close browsers. Or use ccleaner to delete the startup entries

Dont think this should be there

I have already tried that, sadly enough.

I've also used dial-a-fix to reset the permissions and reinstall the windows update service.

(Over 15 minutes, couldn't edit post)

I have done all the things you mentioned with HijackThis and rebooted.

The problem is still occurring.

Get malwarebytes update it then do a full scan. And get trojan remover in my sig, update it then click on scan. Then select all options under the utilities menu. It'll reset everything

Had this problem a couple of weeks ago on a customers PC.

The fix was;

Go into add remove programs, uninstall IE8 which reverted back to IE7.

Reboot, open IE7, go to tools/Internet Options/ Advanced Tab/ restore advanced Settings & reset.

Manually download IE8 or get it off a Mag CD One place is here (http://www.ie8.msn.com/microsoft/internet-explorer-8/en-us/ie8.aspx).

Install it, then try windows update again.

Thanks, wainui.

I'll give it a go.

Just an update.
It didn't work for it; however.

Doing what Wainui suggested did allow access to the automatic updates service which allowed me to install May's Microsoft Malicioius Software Removal Tool.
The computer is restarting now.
Will update when I can see if I have access.

Fingers crossed.

Edit:
Wooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Looks like Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool worked.

Thanks for all the support guys!
