I'm running Windows 7, I want to record some sounds from a youtube clip using Audacity but I think when I record the mic picks up the speakers, because when I turn down the speakers the volume on the recording goes down.

How do I map the audio directly to through the soundcard (my soundcard is a small optional plugin that came with my mobo)? I find the online guides confusing.

Here are screen shots of my setup http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/sound_11273965672.jpg

Try something basic - I have recorded using the basic windows recorder. Then convert to mp3. Also free recorder. Good tutorial from Online Tech Tips. (http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/how-to-capture-save-record-or-download-streaming-audio-for-free/)

What version of Audacity do you have ?

I know there is problems with the earlier versions and Windows 7 - the Beta version In the download box (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) is meant to work OK.

Right click in the middle area of the recording device window (your second picture)
Click on show disabled devices
Is Wave Out Mix listed?
If it is right click it and set as default
If not you may need the manufacturers driver instead
of the generic Windows one.

Once that is done you can select wave out as recording source in Audacity.
