Everytime I try to use Windows Update I get the following error;
Code 80072EFE Windows Encountered and unknown error

After searching through windows help and support and hours looking on the internet, I have realised that I can also not open any website that has 'microsoft.com' in the address. I have tried numerous anti-virus and anti-malware programs to no avail.

I am running Vista 32-bit SP2.

Any ideas??

Are you using another firewall, besides Vista's? Are you using any proxies? Go through this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941). Read Advanced Method A and see whats in the hosts file

Get hijackthis below (if you cant get there normally, boot into safe mode / networking). Download / install / run it. Click on scan the system and save a log. Copy and paste the log here

I dont have any firewalls running, and I cant go to any microsoft websites. According to http://ip-lookup.net I'm not using any proxies either.

Wouldnt be surprised if Mcafee (this inc a firewall, by the looks of it) is stuffing things up. Disable Mcafee, then try. You can tick these, then tick fix checked. Close browsers

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe -hide

Remove / uninstall this. Its adware

I find this interesing because I have had the same problems for 2 months
and have been trying to sort it with MS Support by email exchange since
31 March. Many possible fixes have been suggested by MS, including one
today, none of which have cured the problems.
I have even gone as far as installing a Windows 7 Upgrade a couple of days
ago but the problems remain the same. I suspected that the reason for this
malfunction was damaged/corrupted files caused by a DNS Trojan, since
removed but leaving behind residual damage. DNS has been flushed, stopped
& restarted to no avail.
I chose the Win7 Upgrade install in preference to a Fresh install to preserve
all my folders, files & settings but the the problem has migrated from Vista
To Win7 in the transfer.
I also have a problem with web searches being redirected to unwanted sales
ad sites whichever search engine I use. The only way I can get directly to a
wanted website is to Copy & Paste the URL into the IE search box. I am sure
that this is being caused by the same corruption as the MS Updates failure.

There is no way I can download anything from Microsoft sites and always get
error 404.0 "Not Found", nor can I install MSSE from CD copy. It,s almost as if
a MS competitor has hijacked / sabotaged my system. I have run the usual AV
scans, posted a HJT log and the system currently appears to be free from any
Trojans, Syware etc., so I don't know where the answer lies and hope that
continued investigation by Microsoft will succeed. With every email sent back
to MS I have given full details of my actions with screenshots to help in their
diagnosis.
I have explored several tech forums but so far all of the suggested fixes have
been tried in my correspondence with Microsoft. This problem must be shared
by many other users, so if MS can't fix it, who the hell can? After all, Windows
is their product and they must have an army of Diagnostic techs employed.
Maybe I'll get lucky and find a solution via this thread.

Trojans can also hit routers Blanco. if you think its a DNS trojan. Reset / then reconfigure the router. If you use one. This should fix the prob. And why what you've done so far hasnt fixed the prob. You need to reset / reconfigure the router itself

Never used a router. Sorry for confusion, I have heard many
people over here refer to a Modem as a Router but I would
of course expect you to make the same mistake. I simply
misread your post in a rush. I have a Modem connected to

Looks like this is going nowhere fast - tough one eh! :D

Just a few more things to try if they have not already been done.

Silly as it seems -- make sure the time and date ( day/month /year) on the PC are correct, if the date/time are too far out Windows wont update and errors.

Make 100% sure there is no proxy running:

1.open your internet explorer

2.go to tools-->internet option-->go to tab Connections

3.click on LAN settings

4.at Proxy server UnTick the Use a proxy server for your LAN

Make sure the host file hasn't had entries added to block MS -- its located at c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\

Id reset the host file any way - since MS wont allow downloads, try This direct (http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9668866) - its from The MS download site (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034/en-us) simply run it.

Failing all that - Several suggestions on this site (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/itprovistaie/thread/0ce7c1e6-7ef2-48e1-b7c9-c8f1e97c71d5/) - or force a windows update with The standalone installer (http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe) - suggested from This site (http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&tid=ceef766d-8eec-456f-9028-1af7c5ed068b&cat=&lang=&cr=&sloc=&m=1&p=1) - scroll down to the user TonyM, has instructions.

Got that right lol. I'm just checking blanco out now. Umm something is blocking svchost (thats what the error means by the looks of it). I killed Win7's firewall, and the error changed. Hmm. Nothing in proxy. So, thats not the prob. 2 things Blanco and lvl had in common. This relevantknowledge thing was on both. And both have P2P programs. I'm just about to log back into Blanco's PC and check the hosts file. Now the error is 80072EE2 for Blanco

Has what ever security software been completely uninstalled (not just disabled) using revo to get the reg keys s well and then tried, sometimes corrupted firewalls / Antivirus can cause all sorts of problems. Disabling does Sweet FA !

Speedy Gonzales
13-05-2010, 10:44 AM
I removed regcure. No fw on it besides Win7's. Avast and onecare (windows messenger is installed I think). One of these errors, someone fixed it by uninstalling the NIC then rebooting. So windows reloads the drivers. This fixed it for some people (using XP). I'll copy and paste step 6 and make a bat file :p

I chose the Win7 Upgrade install in preference to a Fresh install to preserve

To Win7 in the transfer. If it was there in Vista, then it may not be fixable, the system may have been changed to much - a fresh install would have been better OR fixed the problem in Vista first - which of course is to late now..
