Hi there, I'm getting the Phone line put in my house for internet use and was wondering what you guys think is the best plan in nz at the moment?.
I will mostly be using it to download and view media.

Willing to pay: Around a $100 a month
Location: Palmerston north

Any help would be appreciated.:nerd:

I would look at Orcon or Telstra Clear.

telstraclear are good. when you have used up your monthlty usage they just add another pack of the size you have chosen. no more back to dial up speeds. GO telstraclear

Telecom BigTime may be worth looking at if you want no data cap, fixed cost, and aren't too fussed about speed... theres a few threads floating around discussing the pros and cons.

How much data do you use? What sort of activities? You said download and view media. Lots of big download, lots of multimedia streaming?

If you are looking for gaming and things like that I heard Telecom Big Time is not great.

Yep, some plans can be closed with a GB size, some are open and just skyrocket the bill, some like Telstra gives you another pack for a additional price.

$100 incl the phone?

IMO, if you look at a good ISP like Orcon you get the feel of what prices are like. For a bit cheaper you may look at Slingshot. What you see is what you get.

As an example, I am on Actrix b/c they are regarded quite good, I don't want to spend much money so I get the 3GB for $29.95 not incl the phone. Toll calls are transferred to Actrix for a $10 discount, if not the bill would be $39.95. I don't play games, I don't stream audio/video, I very seldom download huge files and if I blew my cap I can surf the net with dialup speed.

I use Vodafone for my land line phone and Broadband.
Get 20gig broadband a month plus no toll calls in New Zealand, any time for $90 month.

Overseas calls 25cts minute up to $2 for two hours.
Been with them for 2 years and never had any problems.

This is on the North Shore, Auckland.

We were on that and can echo those thoughts, we are in Nelson, currently on Xnet with a VoIP router and phone can't comment on price son won us a year free so have no idea on cost, service is adequate only had one day where it dropped out off and on in the last 3 months, speed is OK does seem to be slightly down on Vodafone but the difference is negligible. We don't seem to get the speed problems that they get elsewhere at night though ours stays pretty consistent

Then I guess you pay around $45 or $50 for a phone if you are outside the Wellington region. That leaves $50 for the internet plan. I haven't keep up with the prices, a good ISP may get you 20GB of data? Due to your needs, you may need to balance out. If you do need more data, I think Telstra provides more for $10 extra right? Worth checking out.

I'm not sure if Telecom Big Time would be suitable for you.
Unless you get Naked ADSL without a Telecom phone, which may provide a few more dollars to spend elsewhere.

We just joined Vodafones $100 a month Home phone + calling + 20GB BB package + free MySky HDi. So far so good, aside from this BB issue (http://pressf1.pcworld.co.nz/showthread.php?t=109227).

MySky is so worth it :drool

Big Time is great, YouTube is fine provided you use Telecoms new DNS servers. Downloading from iTunes is also uber fast (cached?).

I'm a big fan of Big Time!
