Didn't know you had to. As far as I know, it just works. Works exceptionally well, too.

How do I set up the spam filter in gmail? You don't - it 'just works'. If you find it's accidentally catching legit messages as spam, or passing spam messages as legit, just select the erroneously filtered message and click the 'Not Spam' or 'Report Spam' buttons at the top of the mailbox.

You may be able to set up a whitelist, and allow only emails from people on your contact list - don't know if Gmail can do this though.

Or if you use an email client you could install something like Comodo AntiSpam or whatever they call it now and just whitelist your contacts and block everyone else

GMail currently can't filter based on your addressbook, but it can filter based on who a message is from.

What exactly is the problem you're trying to solve here?

Stop emails coming from certain email domains such as hotmail, yahoo and windowslive. You can achieve that easily - just create a new filter, and put the domain in the 'from' field.

Thanks for your help Erayd. Found I block multiple domains with just the one filter.
