You may also be able to use Windows Live Messenger - according to This article (http://www.thewindowsclub.com/use-windows-live-messenger-as-lan-file-transfer-manager) WLM can detect if you are on a LAN instead of using the net -- Worth a try, and costs nothing.

Also this program (http://www.softsift.com/200607/lan-voice-chat-10-voice-communication-over-local-area-network.html) looks promising. One Other forum (http://forums.techarena.in/windows-software/1110972.htm) suggests Ventrilo (http://www.ventrilo.com/index.php) works Via a LAN as well.

Didn't you look at the last set of links ?

One is called LAN VOICE chat
Dedicated especially for LAN (Local Area Network) communication, LAN Voice Chat 1.0 allows you to call users over the LAN and talk to them as though it is over a phone. This is very similar to, or rather like, those VoIP (Voice over IP) services, such as MSN Messenger,Yahoo Messenger, Skype, GoogleTalk…etc, except that it is only dedicated to LAN networks. Hence, there is no compromise of security as data packets are not transferred over a third-party network.

- and the other,
"Ventrilo 3.0.0 is the next evolutionary step of Voice over IP (VoIP) group communications software. "

woops, i didnt see the whole of your second post, i thought it was part of your signature. we have tried vent before but didnt really understand how to use it. also lan voice is only a trial. and for the ip address (we did this for vent as well) we just checked it on the internts, will that work?

we just checked it on the internts, will that workDont know - sometimes you have to download and "suck it and see".

The trial is free, so if it works and does what you want, its not exactly expensive to purchase, even at US dollars
The price has to be at least $1 per computer license and the initial license cannot be less then $7.That'll break the bank

If it doesn't work, then nothing is lost apart from a bit of time.

Have a look above though This link (http://www.thewindowsclub.com/use-windows-live-messenger-as-lan-file-transfer-manager) - says WLM can go local only on file transfer - No idea if it will also do Voice over Lan - Try it and see - nothing to lose, every thing to gain.

Grab yourself the latest TeamSpeak3. It's free and isn't limited to 7 people as Ventrillo is, not to mention the codec quality is significantly improved.

You might also be interested in KiwiLAN, see my sig, I'm an avid DotA player myself ;) Same nickname on bnet as the forums, you may have played in one of the many hundreds of games I've hosted :D

Why not try netmeeting? Built into XP and it can be tricked into working on Vista / WIN7.

Supports voice, video and text chat and works 100% on a LAN.
