Good job Auckland, you get the Metallica concert (http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/music/3633646/Metallica-set-to-rock-New-Zealand).

Is it really that hard to make a trip down south to Chch, even Wellington doesn't get it.

Guarantee it will sell out.

Well Auckland blows but they do have the greatest population so hardly surprising :P

Auckland does have a warmer weather than many of NZ. Larger pop, diverse culture, a proper bridge and a tower. Hate it or love it, it does have a larger city appeal.

IMO I think a subway system would be suitable but NZ may not alwaya want that. Look at thier temp structure for the Rugby WC. Look at their waterfront fenced off  Not sure what people in NZ or AKl wants honestly ...

Speaking of Wellington, they pulled the Mobil 500 race years ago, they don't have a Casino, dunno really. Many tourist just say they find Wellington boring. Sure it's got the lifestyle, the arts and stuff. There's def less buzz. Apart from say Courtenay Place on a Fri Sat night, but that's quite generic. Every city has night life. At night the city is dead apart from Courtenay Place. After seeing Christchuch at least that has more tourist (AKL included too), and more shops are opened. Wellington is like - time for bed time. Or wait, Film Festival and you get the odd red carpet once a year or you get the film theatres opened up, I mean really other than for the festival buffs who are willing to dress up and pay for admission tickets and have a fancy pancy party, what else is there. Normal people both mainstream and young may just meet up in a fast food restaurant in the city, a coffee shop, Courtenay Central, chatting outside a street corner that's about it.

Then Welilngton talks about luxury cruisers, I mean hey you make them walk 100s of metres from the deserted rail tracks to the city,
They also make them take the ferry at the middle of no where

Many people don't care about the few key events in Welly, they want something that is regular. I mean hooray the Phoenix, Cuba Carnival and the odd film event. I went to the bones festival last time but later on after they all gone into the theatre and then the organisers started dismantling the stands and opening up the streets again  That was just dinner time.

Wellington has the best entertainment in the world for visitors. Grows good gorse too.

Any time, day or night, you can stand or sit viewing the place and get an irrepressible feeling of glee when you think that it will soon be time to leave. Priceless.

Wellington might have the waterfront sorted but I find the place an ******** to drive around and find a park.
Must be the dumbest place to have put a capital city in the world on the side of a hill on a faultline.
Maybe Hutt valley ok but the capital should be razed and turned into a farm possibly a goat farm because they are partial to young gorse.
Everytime I have been there I couldnt wait to split dont like the place one little bit went to Te Papa in January for the kids but never again unless passing thru to the ferry.
