I thought I'd make a start...

My understanding of the history of beer is... WHO GIVES A STUFF! It's usually cheaper than bottled water or coke. And after a few it has a pleasant intoxicating affect.

If you're starting tonight, you're starting too late!!

You should be getting amongst it now - Guinness for breakfast, Murphy's for lunch, and a rosy-cheeked Irish lass for dinner! :banana

We used to be able to buy it from one of our local liquor shops but not any more. :angry

The F1 girls could start a girl only post on say makeup, shoes etc and we could do some drive by comments.
Got Castle Lager at Pt Chev Supa Liquor.

Carlsberg is probably the best beer in the world.

On the topic of beer, anyone drink NZ Pure? I bought a box the other day and memorized the code from the competition so I could enter, but didn't look to see how to enter and googling isn't working.

I used to work out of Lichfield Fonterra Plant. The waste product was Whey. I used to wonder what I could get if I dropped heaps of sugar into a 650,000 litre tank and let it ferment.

I could get 25,000 litres into my truck.

Yep, I remember Lucky Ken. Huge, very expensive advertising campaign up until the launch. There was Lucky Lager, Lucky Stout and Lucky Ale (I think). The brewery had paid heaps to a Hawaiian brewery for the use of the name Lucky as I remember. Then the launch, followed by sales of zilch. I think Claytons lasted on the market longer than Lucky. I have often wondered if anyone in the brewery lost his job over that fiasco.

Your memory must be better than mine. Do they still make water?Yeah, but they don't brew it with hops, barley etc. And plain water doesn't have any natural preservatives.

I notice a few comments about Castle lager. I worked as manager of a bottle store for 5 years in South Africa, and had unlimited free booze. My conclusion was that most decent European beers are way better - Castle was only average.

Waikato is worth a fair bit of effort to avoid except in emergencies, like a fire that could damage proper beer. The reputed quart bottles when well shaken can be used as extinguishers. CAUTION: Protective clothing should be worn. In the event of accidental ingestion contact a physician without delay.

I'm 1/4 Irish, but I sure won't be making a fuss of the day, and I'm too lazy to go out and buy some Guiness. But, it's fun to take the P outta the Irish.

I reckon we Kiwis identify with the Irish. Take this song (The Sea around Us) from the Dubliners:

They say that the lakes of Killarney are fair
That no stream like the Liffey can ever compare,
If it's water you want, you'll find nothing more rare
Than the stuff they make down by the ocean.

chorus:
The sea, oh the sea is the gradh geal mo croide*
Long may it stay between England and me
It's a sure guarantee that some hour we'll be free
Oh, thank God we're surrounded by water.

* "great joy of my heart"

That must be a new and much improved lemonade, that I have yet to encounter. Until it becomes readily available, I may just continue diluting beer exclusively with saliva, and by drinking reasonably swiftly even that can be minimised.

It was in the olde (1950s) Nelson that I first encountered the stuff. One comment was to the effect that the purchasers had obviously never tasted it before. Another comment was :"Take the top off the flagon slowly; if it sucks the cork in, it's Harleys".
If you spilled the stuff, the council would serve you an abatement notice. Harleys was used to fortify dioxin.
