My Eee701 has been O K, and I only paid $500 for it at Dick Smith [Xmas 2008/9].
Good wireless connectivity as well as Ethernet; and also, will run an external big screen for easier home use. I have used it extensively in Europe and S E Asia. The power adaptor and charger unit seems to run on pretty much any voltage.

Acer netbooks are pretty good too. So are the HP ones but a tad overpriced...

We have 4 Eee701's in the family. Two are on English XPpro, one on Chinese XPpro and one on Linux. Never had any trouble with any of them. As they only have a 4gig hard drive, I use a 7gig SD camera card as a second drive for data etc, works well. You can get these from TradeMe for about $300.
