You dont really need any codecs with Win7. Just use windows media player. It supports more than Vista and XP did

I use VLC and it works fine, WMP would do it too though.

Sound is 5.1 running through optical to a DTS decoder. Crisp as a crisp thing.

I'll give it a go I didn't think that vlc or WMP would run a mkv h.264 file at true 1080p playback

It depends more on your CPU and graphics card, both programs (well WMP12 anyway, I haven't tried WMP11) are quite capable.

I use Shark007 codec pack to get DTS sound and decent mkv support, player I use is either WMP12 or WMC7

+1 for Shark007 :-)

However as wratterus said your GPU / CPU determines a lot. If you've got an underpowered GPU, try the CoreAVC codec.

try the CoreAVC codec.

Just be aware that CoreAVC only works with an nVidia GPUs, the op's specs list ATI

This page makes interesting reading on the subject-

It is rather Nvidia-centric though, and he is a fan of MPC-HC. (So am I)

VLC plays anything

Yes and no, default settings DIVX playback is horrible (blocky, banding etc) and there is no HW support for h264 so if your CPU can't hack 1080p but your vid card can, VLC won't cut the mustard.
