Hey I just turned on one of my old pcs that I have not used so far this year and the only thing that happened was long beeps. Motherboard is a MS 6526 V2 with a P4 of some speed. Any ideas what might be causing it?

All depends on what beeps exactly.

Generally most beeps are either RAM fail or VGA fail.
But the exact sequence would be helpful.

Have a look inside, might be something nesting in there.

The beeps are there to tell you something as in these tables depending on your BIOS.

Take a look here http://www.pchell.com/hardware/beepcodes.shtml This is a list of beep codes from various manufacturers. When PCs arrived here in the early 80's these beeps at POST were used to indicate the health or otherwise of the PC.

Sorry, Sweep got here first.

there does not seem to be a sequence. Just long beep long pause long beep long pause and it just keeps going

Pull it to bits check it / clean it, then put it back together

I would reseat the video card and the RAM as a start.

nedkelly

only using the onboard graphics cause there is no slot for external card

If it was going before no. But if it didnt work before with the CPU thats in it, the mobo may not support it, without a BIOS update And it wont turn on / post

Have you changed the CPU since it last booted?

ok so it was the cpu. So this is either good or bad, good, the cpu is higher than 2.4 ghz. Bad, cpu dead. oh well pc going now

Speedy Gonzales

Well its either the CPU that was in it is dead. Or the BIOS thats on it now, doesnt support the CPU that was in it

ok deos any one know if there is a bios update for this motherboard that will let me run a faster cpu? Because it now has a 1.8 P4 and if the other one can run would like to use it.

This maybe it (http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=searchresult&keywords=MS-6526&table=download). But then you have to figure out whether its G or GL. What BIOS update is on it now?

Sweep

Looks like the GL has a LAN socket and the G does not.

nedkelly

Ok I have a LAN socket so must be GL

Speedy Gonzales

What BIOS is on it now? Does the GL looks like yours?

not sure what is on it now. But im confused, there is a sticker on the motherboard that says pheonix but when I go into BIOS it says Award software. How would I find what is on it now?

Dont worry about the name of the BIOS. All you need the the version thats on it. It'll either be in the BIOS. Or on the post screen. Press pause to stop it on the post screen, when you reboot

Hmm I did reply to this it disappeared. I would try another P4 mobo, if you've got one first. And see if the higher CPU works in it. Because if you flash the BIOS and its the wrong one (altho there's only 2 mobos called MS-6526 on the site), it'll kill it.

But it doesnt look like the BIOS you posted is the latest one. And it doesnt match any of the BIOS dates. So, I dont know what version it is! But if you want to flash it go ahead (with the slower CPU first). Then install the other one. If it doesnt work, then its probably dead. Whats the other CPU?? 2.4? 2.8? 3..0?? And whats the FSB (thats written on it)?? 400? 533? 800?

2.26GHz/512/533 SL6RY. This is what my mate gave me when he gave it to me.

Speedy Gonzales

Ah ok 533 FSB. What kind of ram have you got in the case??

DDR 400? 266? Because, when I had a 2.4 533 FSB CPU (well I've still got it, but I'm not using it, I dont have another P4 mobo), and DDR 400 ram, the computer wouldnt turn on (altho it didnt beep, it just wouldnt go). Until I changed the Freq or the FSB in the BIOS to 266 I think it was. The Freq had to match the FSB of the CPU. Once, I changed it, it was fine
