24-02-2010, 09:49 PM
Hey I just came back to my laptop after going down to have dinner and it was completely frozen. Clock was at 8.38pm so when i restarted it I had a look through the system Event viewer log, nothing was there. Any ideas what could have happened?

A buggy application?

only had chrome opera and pidgin open at the time. But if it was a buggy app would it freeze the entire laptop so much that even pushing the caps lock button does nothing?

uh oh just did a quick Mbam scan and it came up with two entries of Rootkit.TDSS. Seem to remember a story some where about this rootkit I think.

This may help (http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=7194). May help if you disable system restore before you do it. Or see if trojan remover can remove it. Update it first. If / after you remove it change all your passwords for whatever as well

ok will do a full mbam scan in the morning while being disconnected from the internet and see what pops up.

I would also use trojan remover as well, if it can pick it up it should remove the files and the registry entries. I would do a full scan of the hdd with this as well. Then you can reset everything, by selecting the options under the utilities menu. If you cant get to some sites, heres the direct link to TR (http://www.simplysupersoft.com/download/dl/trjsetup681.exe). If you get teamviewer now, I could help you out. Boot into safe mode / networking

thanks for the offer speedy but I can access internet perfect. I will also try trojan remover in the morning. If it does not work I will just do a reinstall of my laptop (i think it is almost due for one any way, now if I can just find all my installers and keys)

Just make sure if youre sure you've got this rootkit, change EVERY password you've got later

Ok I just had the laptop freeze up again while doing a mbam scan, so im going to do a safe boot scan of trojan remover which I downloaded and updated before I disconnected from the internet.
