Don't you just hate homework? Anyway, need opinions for homework, most of them about the olympic luger's death. A yes/no answer will be fine. :thanks

#1: Did you watch this tragedy on T.V?

#2: Do you think luging is too dangerous for an olympic sport?

#3: In light if this tragedy, should luging be banned from the olympics?

#4: Do you think speed was a major contributor to this tragedy?

Don't worry, I WILL give credit to you on my assignment. Again, Thanks!

#1 - No (Watched it later online though, just out of interest)

#2 - No (as a sport it's not super dangerous, it's more the individual track in this case being a bit dodgy)

#3 - No (if any sport that injured or killed someone was banned from the olympics it would be damn boring.)

#4 - Yes (of course, that's kind of the point with luging). :p

Don't want any credit....good luck with your assignment. :)

Yes but so was track design as in inadequate thought into placing metal poles so close to the exit of a bend

No. Read it online on the news though.

No. Life's dangerous.

No. God sake, enough nanny state stuff around already.

No. It's the stopping suddenly that's fatal.

What weird homework, it wasn't like that in my day, we had real homework set, like some maths, or a French translation, or solve some mechanics problems.

It makes one wonder what the world is coming to

Everyone in the sport is aware of the dangers but ultimately decide that being the best is worth the risk. What I think is wrong is showing the crash on TV with no warning - they used the footage to advertise their coverage :annoyed:

The last one is definitely a "no". When it comes to root-cause analysis, one must not blame the first obvious thing that comes to mind.

Lack of safety factor, failure to control the luge properly, drug abuse (possibly), unsafe luge used etc.

1) Nope. Internet.
2) Nope. Everything has inherent risks attached to it.
3) Nope. If you want to live in fear, don't get out of bed, you could trip and slam your head against the drawers/desk/something and snap your neck. Fear solves nothing, save creating panic.
4) Nope. While obviously if he wasn't at such a speed he would never have died, he had concerns about the track - which others seemingly did not. So I would say it's safe to assume that, it was him who was lacking the skills and confidence required to do the event.

yes, no, no, yes (as in, if he wasn't travelling at speed, he wouldn't have died. but luging requires speed so...)

1. NO. i watch very little TV.

2. no. most sport has risk.

3. no, see point 4.

4. no, it was caused by bad track design.

more thoughts on point 4.

there was a steal pole only a few feet from the track, and the only protection was a few inches of padding foam, the dude was going about 100KPH.
this could only end in death.

within 24 hours thay put up a wall, the wall should have been part of the design from the start.

the track should be designed so no matter how bad you get out of control you can't come out of the track and hit a pole at 100KPH.
