View Full Version : New PC started a go slow!

stuffed

My new PC has started running very very slow. Simple applications eg Windows Explorer will take ages to open.
Have not installed any new programs or applications.
Have done a System Restore.
Have tried turning off AV, Outlook and MSM.
It will come right and think everything is ok then it reverts to slow mode!
Anyone any thoughts for a quick fix while I wait on my supplier to respond?!
Many thanks

Have you installed all the updates. Are you using a pic as the background, or a solid colour background?? I know the latter can slow win7 down. Its a known issue

Post a log, and we'll see whats in it. Even tho you said you havent installed anything (altho dont know why you used SR, if you havent). Go to start/run, type msconfig. Go to the boot tab / advanced options. Change the number of processors to the max, then reboot

Run WinPatrol - all looks ok.
Using standard W7 back ground.
Help me with the log!! – Event Viewer? Then where?
Thanks

I meant a hjt log not an event log

Click Start, type in reli select "Review Reliability History" When the chart pops up, look for a red circle with a white X - click it, look under Critical Event -- and if thats the time it slowed, there will list the problem app (s).

Post a hjt log then. Something in there maybe screwing things up. Have you installed all of the updates for it?

Is this an RTM version of Win 7?? Shouldn't the version be 6.1.7600 or something?

You can tick these then tick fix checked

Speedy – thanks – what is an “RTM version of Win 7?? Should the version be 6.1.7600 or something?” Are you saying that this is not a legit or current copy? There will be a punch up with my supplier if this is the case………………..

If you run computer then go to help / about, what does that say for the version?? RTM is the final release of windows 7

Battleneter2
15-02-2010, 02:42 PM
The Version is a side issue anyway, even if its RTM performance should not be a issue.

You guys should start with a few basics first, is there anything chewing CPU time in taskmanager with (show processes from all users), what's the memory usage like?. Haven't seen the basic stuff asked or answered, its been straight down the Malware path.

Thats ok then its right, the log info is wrong. Probably coz it doesnt know what windows 7 is. Did you change the cpus under msconfig to 2 or whatever the highest # is. Then reboot? Is the hdd SATA or IDE??

Are you using an external hdd as well?? Could be the external hdd/s making it slow. Turn them off, or remove them. See what happens

Wonder if this has something to do with it

Using a 1TB backup drive – has not been a problem – that am aware of.
Found Network Magic great with 3 different OS’s on the network – XP, Vista and 7 although thank goodness the Vista laptop has gone west.
Thanks you guys for all this help – currently the computer is running fine!!
Still no word from the help desk from my supplier……….
Meanwhile having to “put up” with Tim Finn, Boh Runga and Dave Dobbyn doing their practice session for tonight’s concert at Millbrook………….sigh.

Is the 1 TB internal or external?? If its external unplug it then reboot. See if its any better. And is the internal hdd with windows on it the bootdisk in the BIOS? See if USB legacy support is in the BIOS. Enable it. If its disabled

wainuitech
15-02-2010, 03:17 PM
Damaged graphic Drivers can also cause hell in slowness - try restarting in safe mode ( keep tapping F8 on startup) see if the speed drops, if it doesn't restart normally, then click start type in cmd right click it, run as administrator - type in sfc /scannow <press Enter>

As per battleneter question, did the CPU usage spike.

To be even more precise, click start, type in Resource Select Resource Monitor when its going slow, look at the options and see what process ( may be more than one) is sucking the power.

Sorry but how do ya "USB legacy support is in the BIOS. Enable it" ?!
It is external.
Cheers

Speedy Gonzales
15-02-2010, 03:55 PM
Look in the BIOS / the manual and see if its got it. Or turn the computer off unplug it then see if its faster. Then you'll know if thats causing it to go slow
