HP Pavilion Windows XP SP3 2.5GB Ram, Genuine Intel 3065Mhz

Suddenly yesterday with two tabs open my computer stalled and on ending the programmes in Task Manager I noticed that the CPU usage was 100%. I have kept the Task Manager open since and the usage is spiking to 100% every time I open a windows or take some action. It's not supposed to do that is it? I have run Spybot, Avast and full Malwarebytes scans and no problems . I would appreciate some advice, thanks.

So what process is using 100%?

Bear with me, I'm in new territory here. What I can see is the moving graph spiking to 100% and the little icon on the task bar climbing to 100%. I'm in IE at the moment and whenever I open and log in to Facebook, or open Email, eg it spikes and continually spikes with any actions I make within the programes. I don't know how to tell "what process is using 100%".

Open task manager look under CPU and the programs running. This is what youre looking for. It'll show the filename of the program on the left..

In the CPU column System Idle Process SYSTEM is hovering 97 to 99, is that it?

Speedy Gonzales

No system idle is usually 98-100%. There must be another process going up to 100%. Look at all the processes running and see which one is going near 100%. Post a hijackthis log, and we'll see what maybe causing it. Is Microsoft security essentials installed?? This can cause the CPU usage to go to 100%

Peak Memory usage: svchost.exe SYSTEM is 193,088. Firefox 91,560. Is that any help. MSSE not installed. Everything in the CPU column except for System Idle is 00 apart from a couple of things at 02 or 03

Thanks, I've done that but it seems the same. Opening a browser it spikes to 100% then goes up and down 100-40-100-20 eg and then settles until I maybe open Facebook and then the same thing. Using the Scrabble app in Facebook and placing one tile, again spiking 100% and going up and down. I guess I need to know if it should do this. Maybe it always does it and I only noticed because of the computer stalling yesterday or will it break my computer.

Uninstall google and yahoo tool bar. They can screw browsers sometimes

Uninstall Mcafee siteadvisor, and try WOT (http://www.mywot.com/en/download/ie). It does the same thing.See if that fixes it

Note that heavy javascript or flash can peg the cpu for short times, especially flash games.
Theres only an issue if your computer actually freezes while this happens - or the 100% cpu continues for too long.

Google and yahoo toolbars gone, Mcafee gone, Wot installed in both browsers. Thanks for your expert help Speedy and thanks pkm. That was my first Hijack this Log, am quite proud of my efforts today too. If the computer freezes again I'll have to revisit the problem.

Sweet :) Hopefully it doesn't freeze again

It seems that my problems have all been related to the Scrabble application on Facebook and Game House itself. Finally a message from Game House has appeared on the support Forum advising that they are now aware that New Zealand is having trouble accessing their games and there is also a know issue with the Scrabble application eating resources so that explains at lot. Thanks Speedy for your help last week, I know how to do a Hijack this Log now and am happy with the other tweaks we did.
