I saw the pingtest.net forum and tried then saw a ad for speedtest.net which does download and upload speed testing, anyway this made me realize how horrible my internet speed is. heres the url:http://www.speedtest.net/result/703960464.png :horrified
I'd like to see anyone get a lower score...

Have you got interleaving turned off?

I get over 5Mbps but it can depend on how far you are away from the exchange.

Speedtest.net is single source and is a rubbish indicator of your true internet performance. From my tests it can be 50% out making it worthless, but hey looks pretty and believable!!

We have 2 connections here -

Cable:http://www.speedtest.net/result/704944613.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

Telecom ADSL: http://www.speedtest.net/result/704946411.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

Done just at start of lunchtime, so all you sods just jumping on the web during your break have slowed us down a bit from the usual!!

As for pathetic results, I was at some of my non-techy in-laws over the holidays & was horrified to see 0.26 down/0.13 up - they're on some 256k/128k limited plan!

But honestly guys, a person showing 4Mbps on Speedtest can have generally faster "real life" downloads than someone showing 8Mbps on Speedtest. It all depends on the hops to your source excluding factors like traffic shaping.

I cringe when I see these threads, its even worse when i see tech articles using it to test ISP performance written by journalists that doesn't know any better.

If you want to test your REAL download performance, use multisource downloading from a known fast source.

+1 for Battleneter2's thoughts.

When you're browsing, you *rarely* go over 30 -> 50KB/sec... VERY rarely, unless you're doing interactive content or video. Even then, it peaks as you load the page, then flattens out to nothing for the next 20-odd seconds while you read what's on the page.

Seriously, a well-done 1mbps connection can whip the pants off a poorly done 8mbps connection ANY day!

icow, what are your pingtest.net scores? (Not SPEEDtest, but PINGtest ;) )

On ADSL Xtra Bigtime

Peak: http://www.speedtest.net/result/680730557.png
Not peak: http://www.speedtest.net/result/707584863.png
sucks that my ping is so high

edit: mine seems to be the highest dl speed for a home user at peak, even beating out cable :o

I can frequently get 14 -> 15m/bit from my parents place on Orcon Silver+? I'm too far from the exchange, also on Big Time, but get my sync speed of 4m/bit reliably :)

Ping times can generally be adjusted down by 10 -> 20ms by removing interleaving. I was getting 5ms pings to my VPS in the CBD for a while! :D
