View Full Version : Bootup problem

Thomas01

The last few days on boot up I have had this appear:-

Ereg.exe Unable to locate component

Followed by:-

This application has failed to start because MSVCR71.dll was not found
Reinstalling the application may solve this problem.

Followed by:-

A rather long note relating to Photo Gallery

But I am lost - as far as I can see all the umpteen photo type programs I have used in the past and left on still seem to work

I suppose the file is on some disk somewhere - but I don't even know what program it refers to.
Help!!

Ereg.exe has something to do with omnipage pro. Remove the entry in startup with ccleaner

Thanks for the advice Speedy.
I tried it and ran CCleaner but it made no difference.
I used ANALYSE and then RUN CLEANER
Was this simple method enough, or is there something else I should do?
I have never altered the default setup in CCleaner

You go to tools / startup, find the ereg entry then delete it, not analyze or run cleaner

Followed your instructions but there was no sign of the file or anything else I recognized as belonging to omnipage.
I had forgotten I had omnipage but as it failed to recognize either MSWorks files (which I use a heck of a lot) or the drafting program I use, it was of no benefit to me and it just got ignored. I decided to uninstall it and did so. But alas no difference - I still get the same irritating notice on boot up.
I presume it must be some other program I have forgotten about but failed to identify.
Back to the drawing board!

Post a hijackthis log. Something belonging to it must be in startup. Why its complaining about it

Followed your instructions but there was no sign of the file

CLick Start, select RUN.
Type msconfig
Select Startup.
Untick it.

CLick Start, select RUN.
Type msconfig
Select Startup.
Untick it.

Tried it Pctek. Seemed to be another way of doing what Speedy wants me to do.
With sadly the same result.
I can find no mention in the startup of the file in question.
I have the feeling that Photo Gallery is a Windows program.
I did have a browse and changed nothing (HONEST!!).
But got a message that I had to reboot because of the changes I had made (none).
OK I rebooted but still the annoying message popped up.

Hi Speedy
Sorry for the delay - My SHMBO of 54 years has just had a knee op.
I guess my best ever day was the day I married her.
My worst days have been this week seeing her in immense pain and not able to do anything to help her.
So I have been distracted .
Now I find myself not able to send you a HiJack log. I ran it OK and I have it available but trying to attach it to this reply I have found impossible. Well impossible for me.
I am obviously doing something wrong but what?
I feel sure I have used this HiJack thing before and didn't have problems.
Tom

Copy and paste it. Don't attach it

You haven't said what the OS is, but try what it says at this site HERE (http://dll.downloadatoz.com/msvcr71.dll-file.html) ( scroll down the page to the instructions) taking any program out of the startup wont fix it, its side stepping the problem.

If that doesn't work, go here and download (http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msvcr71) the missing .dll file, extract it and dump it into the C:\Windows\system32 folder. Agree to over write if it asks.

This application has failed to start because MSVCR71.dll was not found

Is cd creator 5 up to date? Because its not compatible with XP, otherwise

Info here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310628). You havent been getting these errors have you ? (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/285910)

What browser are you using? If youre using IE6, I would update it. Since Google and MS will be dropping support for it soon. I would also update to SP3, if this isnt an AMD system

We it was hard.

I'm afraid I was out of my depth and really didn't understand what was wanted. I could have done with you peering over my shoulder.

Wainuitech
I tried what you recomended and got the missing dll file down and installed where you said it should be. I have the file in a lot of places on my computer so I was a bit puzzled why Windows seemed unable to find it.
I also tried my Registry Mechanic which is so old it is not supported any longer. So I switched to RegistryBooster (actually bought it !!) as the price seemed reasonable - it promised my sort of problem would be solved and they included at no cost System Tweater.

Well it didn't make any difference to my problem and when I tried System Tweaker it crashed and refused to run!

I was desperate by this time.
So I tried googling my problem and amazingly found somebody with the same problem and same name (Tom) asking advice and getting it.
It turns out that photogallery is part of the HP printer program and that program doesn't mention it even in the help files.
I use a HP printer so I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it. Had some problems - in fact I did it about three times before it worked OK but the problem is solved. For now anyway.
Thanks chaps for the help - it did help keep me going.
Tom

pw

I have already managed to cure the problem I was having and need no more help.
But I worry now I may have left something in place causing problems to you. Can you be more specific?

Teamviewer is a remote desktop/support program allowing another computer to access yours and guide you or actually control your computer.
When you download and run the client program file (Quick Support), it will give you a identification number (ID) and password (pw) allowing the other computer (running the host program (Full Version)) to connect to yours (you'd need to tell him (phone, email or whatever)).

That doesnt sound like you fixed the prob / ticked the entries I posted. It sounds like you had no idea what I was talking about

All you need is the ID and password, nothing else to log in. But if you've fixed it say no more

Thanks for the explanation feersumendjinn.
And thanks speedy for trying to help me.

I must admit to having absolutely no experience of this program although I was aware such things exist - well I do watch Star Trek.

Life has got too complicated since I used to help people with their computers running up to DOS6

Anyway I have managed to cure the problem - incredibly easy once you know how!!

Just wonder what I am going to do wrong next.
