View Full Version : DVD RW Drive spits out CDs

The DVD RW drive on my HP laptop will not allow me to access any CD or DVD for any reason.

I can insert a CD and close the drive but as soon as I want to access the CD the drive ejects the CD. It brings up a small window that says, "Insert a disc."

It would be great if I could use the drive to install a programme but it does not want to co-operate.

It is a HP Pavilion dv6000 running Vista.

Thanks for your help.

Corrupt driver for the drive? Drive died? does this happen with all discs, what happens if you try a boot disc such as a live linux does it still kick it out upon restarting and trying to boot from the disc?

I have no idea if the driver is corrupt or the drive has died. How does one tell?

I assume that the drive has not died as it can be opened, closed and there is a negative reaction when I try to access any disc.

I do not have a boot disc. I'm not certain I know what a boot disc is.

It does it with all discs. No exceptions.

Maybe it doesn't like the taste of them :p

Start up in safe mode, see if it still does it with the CD / DVD's

Have you checked in device manager for any exclamation marks on the drive?

Could also be Vistas CD burning feature - have a look at This article (http://www.tipandtrick.net/2008/how-to-disable-windows-vista-cddvd-disc-burningrecording-function/) to disable it - make sure you make a restore point first since you will playing in the reg.

The above link is the solution from the Auto Eject in Vista (http://www.tipandtrick.net/2008/how-to-disable-windows-vista-cd-or-dvd-drive-auto-eject-or-open-feature/)

Is it an H P laptop out of guarantee. Laptop DVD units are not very robust and can get the sulks. Pricey to replace, which was my 'fix it' guess when reading your first posting.
