Downloaded and installed Avast 5 (Free).

Problems:

1. Current status says that my system is not fully protected - clicked 'Fix Now' but nothing happens.

2. Real Time Shield is OFF, clicked 'Turn On' - nothing happens

3. Mail Shield is OFF, clicked 'Turn On' - nothing happens

Have re-started 2 times but did not fix the problems.

Looks like it's going to be another AVG ?????

It does have probs (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0). It looks like when you go to install it, do a custom install, and dont install the behavioural shield, whatever this is. Since this causes probs, inc crashes

Have uninstalled it; re-installed 4.8.

Don't have much confidence in MS's

MSSE out performs Avast in detections on every test I have done so far - working on a PC today, had Avast 4 - but it wasn't working as infections had disabled it.

Removed it with Revo, installed MSSE, still scanning but appears to be finding a few, it will be an over Nighter -500GB drive almost full.

Used Avast 4 for ages. Tried MSSE and it ground my computer to a crawl.( Vista sp2 with 2g mem). Went back to Avast and have just downloaded Avast 5. Working perfectly after I used the Avast removal utility to get rid of 4. Might be worth a try. Good luck..http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

Thats the problem I have with MSE it's not as clear what it protects.

AVAST 5 has all these different shields.

Its an anti-malware / antivirus / anti-spyware program. And scans removable drives, like USB flash drives. Obviously you still have to scan, like any other AV program. Only thing with Avast, from what I've read, V5 is worse than version 4.8

I think the problems were with version 5.0.415 and .418 is now out.

Its an anti-malware / antivirus / anti-spyware program.

It's an antivirus.
It's other claims are to be taken with a grain of salt, like all other "all-in-one" packages.
It is a fairly decent free AV, even so, team it with Spybot and Malware Bytes. Avast is dead in my opinion.

BTW anyone done a test on Antivir lately?

Got that right. Avast is dead along with AVG, and anything called Symantec / Nortons. And add Mcafee to that as well

The most widely used programs are dead? Yeh, right. Very scientific comment.

Try them then. See how far you get / go without getting infected with something
