Hi, in the past I grabbed a WinxP HDD off one PC attached to mine. I had to seek a MS article on taking ownership of the HD before I can access it.

It did not ask for a pasword. I was able to access "My Documents".

Is it possible that without the password you cannot access the particular folders?

No if its from another computer, then you have to take ownership of it. Before you can access it. It has nothing to do with a password (since you dont need one)

Cool.

If I want to prevent someone taking a HDD and attaching it into another computer and reading the files without the password - what are my options?

Nothing, like I said it doesnt need a password. All you have to know, is how to take ownership of the hdd. The only way you'll put a password on it, is to encrypt it or the whole hdd. With something like truecrypt. Just dont forget the password. Or you wont get into it either. Easier way if the case can be locked and the hdd is in the case, lock it

Perhaps a 3rd party software to encrypt folder(s)?
