I am wondering if anyone can help me with this?

I was recently up to the Homer Tunnel/Gertrude Saddle area taking photos of the Mt Cook lily (it isn't!), also known as Giant Mountain Buttercup (and it's not that either!). The Latin name is: Ranunculus lyallii.

But what is it's Maori name???? Can anyone help with this?

TIA :)

Searching Google suggests it doesn't have a maori name,

I strongly suspected that. Those look quite definitive - thanks for that.:)

My more knowledgible botanical and horticultural friends couldn't seem to come up with anything that could be confirmed.

Newsflash! Update!

The Reed Field Guide to New Zealand Fauna & Flora by Brian Parkinson (2001) says it is:
Kopukapuka.

Which does seem a little odd, as I can't cross reference it on the Net. :(

Seems to be a conflict, it says that is the Chatham Island Forget-me-not, as do other sources. So the Reed Field Guide seems to be in error.

Terry - I agree.

So - we'll miss the Maori name for the moment. There will be others at the meeting that are more knowledgable than me. Watch this spot...

I have got nine books on alpine plants, and none of them give a Māori name for Ranunculus lyallii; not even in those books where the authors routinely give Māori names for plants when they are known.

I got intrigued and did an extensive internet search, and still came up with nothing.

There is a book by James Beever called "A Dictionary of Maori Plant Names" (1991), published by the Auckland Botanical Society that is a possible source, if you have it in your local library. It costs $5 from the Society plus p & p. Or you can buy it from a number of overseas sources where it is advertised for up to $US20 plus p & p...

And you are right - kopukapuka is the name for the Chatham Is Forget Me Not.
