My mate gave me his hardrive to format but when connected it to my pc it didn't show up.It made the connection noise and said your hardware is ready to use and all that.It is a Memorex 320gb.model no.ETD320CB.He said it was connected to a Mac,is that why Windows can't see it?

Look in disk management, you may have to format it

Does he want it back, if you format it in Windows. Since a Mac may not read it? What version of windows is it?

Pass then. Some sites say you can use a linux cd and fix it. Why format it in windows then if he wants it back?

if its formatted in fat32, the mac will read and write to it, NFTS the mac will only be able to read and not write.
If the drive is formatted in a mac format, you will probably need to initialize the disk in disk utility before formatting it
