Hey my mate has a modem and wireless router combo, and he is thinking about buying a new router and using the old router to give internet into the WAN port. Will this work or just make big headaches?

Probably make it harder to get anything to work

So whats the point in getting another modem or router? If the one he's using is working?

An all-in-one modem / router / wireless AP combo is "easiest".

Definitely recommend the NetComm NB6Plus4Wn!

Ah ha ok then. Well, yup. I would definitely get a wireless router and modem in one. Having them separate, makes things a lot more difficult. And some arent that easy to configure. Thats only a router, NOT a modem. So you wont be going anywhere
