Cannot get into router from desktop (hard wired). Wi fi from laptop works ok and can use internet no probs. Desktop can launch Mailwasher to check for email and can also update clock from Massey Uni. If I type router address into address bar from desktop I get timeout eventually. No prob from laptop. i.e. it's only the desktop pc giving problems. Any ideas? Thanks.

WIN 2K PRO Desktop. XP Laptop
FF 3.5.6 on both

Is there a firewall on 2K?? Maybe it doesnt like 2K?? You need XP+ or something to log into it? Sounds like a proxy or something blocking it. Since you can still get email. Can the desktop get on the internet, using a browser?

Hi Speedy. Yes there is a firewall but it is not launched. It has been working fine for years with IE and FF. I can only check for Email. I didn't say that I could receive it. I have sent a test email from lappy so I know that there is one waiting for delivery but this does not show on mailwasher. No. cannot get to internet using Browser. As I said browser just times out with blank page. Browser does not complete launch.

Whats the firewall? Run trojan remover <- direct link (http://www.simplysupersoft.com/download/dl/trjsetup681.exe). Since it can update the time, it should be able to update this. Then scan. Or post a hijackthis log somehow

OK Speedy, I've dl,ed TR. Installed and run update. Launched and up comes error "Cannot find import; DLL may be missing, corrupt, or wrong version file "gdiplus.dll, error 126.

Sorry I didn't answer f/wall question. It's comodo.

Speedy Gonzales

Is 2K up to date, with ALL updates??

All it says on the site is:

I get the error message "A required DLL file, GDIPLUS.DLL, was not found" (or "The dynamic link library gdiplus.dll could not be found") when I try to start Trojan Remover (or the FastScan runs).

Earlier versions of Trojan Remover required the use of the Microsoft Windows file GDIPLUS.DLL. Later versions do not. Update your program to the latest version and this should resolve the issue. But it didnt. So, dont know what you can do. If 2K works with teamviewer, I could check it out from here. If it works

bluenose

Yes 2K Pro is up to date with all updates as of second Tuesday of last month. I have also run TR again and checked for latest updates and the reply was you have the latest updates. Updated MBAM (18Megs) and run that, no nasties. So I can get to the internet direct but can't talk to router. Will have to run checks to see if something on PC got corrupted when I closed down last night. I am going to borrow live CD from mate. Will get back and let you know the outcome.

Many thanks Speedy. Much appreciated.

I had a similar problem when I first tried connecting my broadband, I cannot remember how I fixed it but it involved a few lines in the command prompt.... i think It was resetting the winsock tcp/ip, which you can do here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

oh and a way to check it would be to try pinging your router, and then pinging a website.
start>run> "cmd", tracert www.website.com , enter
see where it times out. If it doesn't hit your modem, give the winsock a reset.

Whats the ip of the router?? The log looks OK

@ 8ftmetalhaed Thanks for the input. I don't quite see the connection. I am not trying to setup broadband. Broadband has been running for years. I'm trying to get the desktop pc to talk to the router. The router is ok because the lappy i'm using atm is working thru it. It's just that the d/top can't login to the router.

Speedy Gonzales

So, whats the default ip to log into the router? And whats the brand/model of the router?

You could buy a PCI network card for $10 to rule out a ethernet port failure on the existing

Belkin F5D7234-4. Not the greatest maybe but replaced about 6 weeks ago under lifetime warranty and so far no problem. I don't believe that the router is at fault. I think it more likely to on the PC; but I am willing to be proved wrong. We can all learn from others and I've learned a lot from this forum.

Shouldnt this be something else besides 192.168.2.1 then??

I think youre getting an IP conflict. Change the IP in 2K to a valid one, within the router's valid IP range

Speedy. Sorry missing number. 192.168.2.10. But as the browser isn't completing it's launch the port numbers don't get as far as the router. Or am I on the wrong track?

Speedy Gonzales

?? According to the Belkin site (http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/497/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvc2lkL1Y2eWI0Z1Jq), its 192.168.2.1 not 10. So, where did you get 192.168.2.10 from? Look under 2K's LAN properties / under TCP/IP. If the IP here shows 192.168.2.1 change it

bluenose

Got the numbers from Belkin helpdesk when the old router was replaced.
IP address 192.168.2.10
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Deflt Gtway 192.168.2.1
DNS svr. 192.168.2.1

Ok then that looks right. That version of comodo was / is the old version right?? Since the later versions arent compat with 2K? Even tho comodo isnt running on startup, is it still installed? And are any of its files still running in task manager?

bluenose

Comodo was disabled in task manager. It had been running no problem but now I have removed it completely AND run Revo just to make sure nothing was left.

Laptop is now hardwired to router and I can get into router using IP address from browser. I think next step will be to get one of the $10 PCI cards as suggested by SolMiester. Don't know where they sell them for ten bucks though!!!

Thanks for your patience and help. SWMBO and Pooch demand a lot of attention as well so can't spend a lot of time here. But will report back as much as I can. Tnx.

Before buying new hardware I would try reinstalling\upgrading the driver for the ethernet card and before that, try winsock fix as someone else suggested.

Download this and try it out for a start:

I think I can say that this is NOT a hardware nor an Address problem. I've just run Puppy 4.3 and had no probs with getting to the router or to the "outside World". The Addresses were found by Puppy to be correct. So the problem has to be software. ie. Something preventing browsers launching properly

Speedy and others, Thanks very much for the help and suggestions, you have provided great support and understanding. And thanks for the teamviewer offer Speedy. I really do appreciate it. I think it is about time to use the XP Pro upgrade CDs that I have been 'Gunner' install for a long time. I did think of repair install of 2K but it seems that it can't be done with the original CDs. Again, my thanks to all you've been just great.

Reinstalling your ethernet driver might make it go. Do you know what your ethernet device is?

bluenose

I guess the ethernet driver is working ok. It's nVidia according to Puppy-431 and I am using it right now through the Desktop PC in question.

Again, many thanks for all you help. It's good to know where to come when you need help and/or advice.

Can you post the output of lspci command from puppy?

bluenose

Yes, I can give that a try but you'll have to guide me. Linux is a foreign country to me. Also have to get lappy side by side with desktop. That shouldn't take long though.

Agent_24

Just open a console\terminal in puppy (there's a shortcut on the desktop) and type the command "lspci" and press enter

Then it will list all your PCI devices. Then just write down what is displayed. Only the information relating to the Ethernet card is probably needed.

If not, Ctrl+Shift+C should work (Ctrl+C won't because that's for kill current process)

From that I see you have the nVidia CK8S Ethernet Controller on nForce 3 chipset

I would try downloading new drivers from Nvidia, however don't get the 5.11 drivers, they cause BSOD with the Ethernet drivers, the only good ones are 5.10

However, currently the beta\archive driver page is down. I will give you a link as soon as it becomes available

I downloaded the file from nVidia and installed just the ethernet controller file. Was that correct or should I have installed more?

Upon reboot nothing has changed insofar as the browser still doesn't complete launch.

The lspci command outputs a listing of PCI devices, however it usually gives it to you in a human readable format ;)

If you were to run a Ubuntu live CD instead and run the lspci command there, you would get a much more sensible output.

In Puppy, they have probably skipped on that information to save space on the CD and instead the lspci command is only outputting the vendor\device IDs etc instead (those are the numbers and letters you see)

Every device vendor has an ID assigned to them, in nVidia's case: 10DE (so whenever you find a device with 10DE as the vendor ID string, you know it's made by nVidia)

Searching the IDs for the nVidia devices in Google, I quickly came up with the results that your motherbaord uses the nForce3 chipset (there are also device lists such as at http://www.pcidatabase.com/)

From there it's easy (sometimes) to find which driver you need.

Usually it's better though to find the model of the motherboard or PC and look that up directly though.

Just installing the Ethernet driver should be fine, if it still doesn't work it's probably got nothing to do with the drivers.

I would be interested in comparing the IP address you get in Puppy to the one you get in Windows 2000...

bluenose
10-01-2010, 11:29 AM

Agent_24

No, localhost is the name of the loopback interface (127.0.0.1) of your own machine.

If you can ping both and get a reply, then the TCP\IP stack and name resolution should be working

Your router will be a different IP, similar to your PC's LAN IP, like 192.168.2.2

What output do you get if you run the ipconfig command in 2K?

Thanks for that SolMiester. That confirms what I have thought from the beginning that the port is working ok. It now leaves the question of what is causing the browser to NOT complete loading. Well as you already proved yourself, you can access the NTP server and synchronize your clock so you must be getting some kind of Internet connection, even if you can't view the router page.

And you said you could get emails, correct? This would be through POP3 which is also not HTTP.

No! I cannot 'receive' emails. What I said was that I can launch Mailwasher and it connects to Paradise but there is no email advice coming back when I know there is email for me. The Mailwasher page just sits on the screen complete except for the mail waiting notification.

I have just been looking through the C\ drive and have come across a folder called 'found.000'. I opened it and it contains another folder called 'dir0000.chk created on 4/01/2100 at 9:01 p.m. I thought I had found something here but the folder was empty. If your hard drive was faulty and you thought it was just filesystem damage, running chkdsk would probably cause more problems and make it harder for data recovery professionals.

There is nothing wrong with chkdsk itself, it does what it's designed to do (fix errors in the filesystem) the problem is that it just doesn't always do what's best for your data.

I was just interested as to why you ran chkdsk, if you had some other problem it could be related to the connection problem as well

I bet you thought that I had forgotten about this thread. Well I haven't. The problem has been solved and I have been running the PC for a week now with no further problems. So here it is.

In the earlier posts I mentioned that the only "autostart" that runs at Boot was Avast and that that auto updated on start. The problem showed when I booted first thing in the morning after the PC had been running ok the night before. Got the clue yet? It seems that for some reason the Avast update reversed the setting of "Web Shield" and I found out later when I couldn't receive email, that it had also reversed the setting of "Internet Mail". No I'm not going to update to Avast 5 yet, I'm just waiting for the teething problems to get sorted. For the time being 4.8 will be sufficient.

So thanks to all who helped and made suggestions and showed a lot of patience. It was much appreciated. :clap
