Hi,
How does one disable MSSE temporarily? Friend was told by someone at Senior Net to turn off her virus checker before doing a defrag. Is this usual? She has XP.
I had a look at mine and I can't see how to turn it off either.

I can't see how to turn it off either.

However I see no reason to do so during a defrag.

You can stop it from starting though if you want to for a defrag session.

To turn off realtime protection, under settings, realtime protection, untick all options and save changes. Although shouldn't be needed for a defrag.

Many thanks Sweep, I don't see why anyone would need to turn it off to defrag either. I will let her know.

Because running processes can cause the defrag to stop all the time.
In which case just run it in safe mode.

So when you run defrag in safe mode, does that stop most of the running processes?

Safe mode stops everything from running (the programs that run in startup). Thats why you boot into safe mode, to remove entries for trojans etc (because it'll be easier to remove from startup). And most cant run in safe mode. You'll also notice that you cant uninstall programs in safe mode either. Most rely on different services, before they uninstall

Ah, that has clarifed it nicely for me! Such a lot to learn still.
