My dads friend brought her laptop around for me to look at, and we cant get it on the wired or wireless network, when hovering over the network icon in the notification bar, an balloon pops up saying "the dependency service or group failed to start" also there are errors in the event log " Event id: 7024 - the network location awareness service terminated with service specific error 3221226008 (0x0000218) She is running Vista Home Premium. I cant figure out whats going on, i went into the services and tried to start the correct service and it just terminates

Is this on some kind of domain?? As it says here (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/itprovistanetworking/thread/0db5ff78-2ba5-480e-8ee2-9a6c65e927bd). Looks like it has something to do with group policy as well. Or as it says above it maybe a corrupt registry (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/156640)

Try using system restore

No, its not on a domain, just a workgroup, i have a domain but this is seperate workgroup

Speedy Gonzales

Could be a corrupt registry then. Or you'll have to go through these (http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=the+network+location+awareness+service+te rminated+with+service+specific+error+3221226008&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a)

Has the laptop had a malware scan put through it - malware can cause all sorts of problems like this.

aidanmaz
03-01-2010, 10:54 AM
all it has on here is norton 360, which is only several months through its 2 year subscription, i dont want to remove it as she just paid for it

Speedy Gonzales
03-01-2010, 10:55 AM
Well post a hijackthis log here. We'll soon see if Nortons is working :p

Long shot -- Found This article here (http://allfaq.org/forums/t/141058.aspx) - its to do with A Server, but if you read the persons question it has the same error message - there are two MS KB links, the bottom one 313222 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222) has a "fix it" along with manual fixes, it says its also for Vista Home Premium - so may just work.

Make a restore point first since you will be altering the reg.

There was a post here the other day. The guys cd stopped working. Reason soon after Norton 360 was installed, it killed it. So it not only stops things coming in and out, it'll stop things from working :p

Do you still have the product key and install file for Nortons ?

I'd be taking it out first, as it looks like it may be damaged in some way.
O23 - Service: LiveUpdate Notice Service Ex (LiveUpdate Notice Ex) - Unknown owner - c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exe (file missing) (Notice the File missing at the end).

Then once going again, reinstall Norton if you want, but take it out with revo uninstaller in advanced mode as the standard Norton uninstaller leaves lots behind.

Sometimes it pays to remove all security then you know there is nothing stopping a connection that way.

This here: O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Launcher] %WINDIR%\SMINST\launcher.exe

Can be known spyware, BUT it can also be the backup launcher to make recovery DVD's in an HP machine.

Why am I not surprised a P2P program is installed ;)

You can tick these then tick fix checked

Close browsers

Go into device manager / view show hidden devices. Then go to non plug and play drivers. Are there any entries here, with a X beside them? If there is, what is it?

Get trojan remover, update it then scan. Then select all options under utilities. See if that resets everything (if this Vista is 32 bit)

aidanmaz

machine appears to be clear with trojan remover, no disabled non plug n play drivers in device manager. Everything appears to be clear.

Did you select all the options under utilities as well?? So, it'll reset everything?

....... no....il go back and redo

Speedy Gonzales
03-01-2010, 12:14 PM

Speedy Gonzales
03-01-2010, 12:21 PM
Try this (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/itprovistanetworking/thread/fb551ba5-327f-4265-8764-ea201331afb4)

My issue was caused by corruption in the TCP/IP Stack

To fix, you will need to run a command prompt as administrator

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt (Right-Click and Run as Administrator)

At the command Prompt type : netsh winsock reset

Ignore all errors, restart and voila'

Its not the same error, but its the same service

aidanmaz
03-01-2010, 12:32 PM
still the same after resetting things.

This one has really stumped me. I have tried just about every site i can find yet still nothing. Short of a complete reinstall, or send back under warranty im not sure what to do for her. I removed norton 360 (hunk of junk). done the sfc /scannow etc,

wainuitech
03-01-2010, 03:31 PM
The warranty will only cover hardware - Not software, so you need to sort out which one it is.

To test, simply load up a linux Live CD - if the internet works its a software problem, if not then it may be hardware.
