I would use something else besides WEP. Use WPA or WPA2 if the router and the laptop support it. With a key. Is SP1 or SP2 installed?

the key for WEP and WPA is the same

They have to be both WEP or WPA. One cant be WEP and the other WPA. Is SP2 installed?

Try this (http://www.vista4beginners.com/How-to-setup-a-wireless-connection). I'm not using vista. And if a service pack isnt installed, install them. Leave the modem on WPA then give it a key then save settings. Then configure vista. The modem/router supports both of them, but it wont show what vista is using. Thats why it shows WEP and WPA and maybe other options
