View Full Version : Updating Win 7 and MS Security Essentials

28-12-2009, 08:31 PM
I have upgraded my machine to Win 7 home premium 64 bit.

Was running AVG and Spyware terminator also at the time I first came across the problem of being unable to update Win 7.

Thinking something in the security software was interfering with the update I tried again with them disabled/uninstalled. No luck going through the Win 7 updater or directly from MS website

Any ideas how I can do the updates?

If MSSE is installed, uninstall AVG, you dont need 2 AV programs. Did you turn updates on?? Or select an option under change settings (under WU in the menu). Then check for updates? Since you've just installed Win7, have you installed the drivers (if any are needed)?

Hi Speedy,
Could not even install MSSE!
Updates are on.
All drivers installed without hassles.

Oh, any error messages, when you tried to install MSSE? Did you run the file as admin?? Could be UAC stuffing things up. I killed it on this

Just tried again with the WU
Got this error code: 8024420F

No help from MS when it directed me there

Disable any firewalls (if you've installed any), kill spyware terminator. See what happens

Did that, no luck

Edited 2: Work through This page of fixes (http://taurarian.mvps.org/WU_XP/0x8024402f.htm)

Finally got round to this.
Initially tried turning off MS firewall and the update happened!!!
Can anyone explain why MS blocks its own updating service?!?!?
And how do I get around it??

Thanks for everone's help
