Got 2005 dell intel desktop its run out of space on C drive so I did a reinstall of xp.
Its mostly gone sweet but in the device manger under other devices these have yellow next to them
ethernet controller
pci device
sm bus controller
video controller
video controller (vga compat)

The dell comes with cd with devices but when I navigate down to them on the device wizard it cant find them.
I tried booting from this cd on start and it lists the devices

Can anyone help I suppose I need the Ethernet up and running at least so I can get it online.
If I cant do by myself its going to cost biccies to get it sorted.

If the CD has install / setup files on it run them. Or go to the dell site, look for the model get the drivers, then install them

The driver CD should auto run when you put it in the drive, you usually select the model number of your PC from a drop down list, that then brings up all the drivers for that model, normally you click on install / Run / and it loads the drivers to a folder in the C: drive and installs them.

According to my manual the computer is a 5150/E510
The drop down menu lists
All
DM051
Dimension DV051
Dimension DC051
DXC051
DXP051

No you install/run exe files, not add them through device manager. The only files that device manager will load are .inf files

Have a look on the system Model sticker on the PC, does it give any of the numbers you mention - manuals are not always 100% correct.

Is it something I did on the reinstall?

Speedy Gonzales

Well the videocard drivers will let you configure whatever if you want to. If you cant get to the windowsupdate site, then it cant be online. install Java and adobe flash

Why does everything work if the video card device manager has yellow tag?
Thanks

Speedy Gonzales

It'll still work (theyre default drivers),but it'll be better if you install the right drivers for whatever the videocard is

Should I take the sides off the computer and look for video card to get numbers?
What do I look for
Thanks

You look for a brand and model. You may have to turn the system off, it maybe under the card. You'll have to remove the card if its not onboard

Download and run Belarc. That should tell you the graphic card's details under the "Display" section.

Is it something I did on the reinstall? Sounds a bit like the system is picking up two OS's - did you do a complete format of the drive and then install XP ?

To fix that click start / run, type in msconfig click on BOOT.INI tab, there will be a button that says "check all boot paths" click that - IF one is not actually there it will ( from memory) offer to remove it - once removed you wont have the two options.

Cant find anything relating to video card on report other than display not detected.

Thanks for that wainui, on the general tab the start up is now selective from normal if I change it back to normal the original problem comes back.
I dont mind doing another reinstall if that will correct the problem properly must have done something wrong on the partition step I think.
:thanks
