As a rule NO, those specs are nice but wouldnt expect build quality to be very good

If you have very low expectations and don't mind the inconvenience of the machine constantly breaking down, then Acer will suit you just fine.

For that price you could get a damn good Asus (http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=383394)or Toshiba (http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=383193)with very similar specs.

Thank You hueybot3000 and others will pass on your comments I recommended they get Toshiba (what I use) or Asus but they still seem keen to buy it (Fools should listen to advice when they ask for it)

I can vouch for Asus, never had a problem with mine. And it feels solid enough that I could stand on it

(Fools should listen to advice when they ask for it)Yes indeed, but then they wouldn't be fools anymore and finding a new hobby is such a drag!;)

Depending on what they are planning to do with it at school you may want to look into one with a long life battery or more power friendly specs.
