Hi guys,

I'm looking to buy a new rig in the new year...

I will be going overseas to BKK, KL and SIN.

Does anyone have any ideas about where the good shopping spots are in KL or SIN? I'm looking for the following:

*** Intel i7 based system
*** preferrably an Asus motherboard but partial to a Gigabyte product
*** 4GB of RAM
*** 500GB SATA disk ( would be buy more than one if the price is right)
*** ATi HD5770 series graphics card (though this might change seen as ATi may release their new GPU's next year)
*** X-Fi sound card - capable of at least 24bit @ 96KHz
*** 600W PSU
*** Thermaltake Case
*** Windows 7 x64 Professional

Thanks in advance.

Sim Lim Square in Singapore has floors and floors of computer shops. It's been a number of years since I was last there though, so things may have changed.

I'm from NZ but I'm now based in Singapore for 18 months for work. When I moved here I bought a new system. I'd done a bit of research beforehand and also spoke to some colleagues who live in Singapore.
I'd say Sim Lim square is probably your best bet, lots of lots of choices. Probably the cheapest too. But it's all based on volume, and the shops are always very busy, so don't expect very good service or support there. It's probably best to decide in advance what you want, then go in and find it at the cheapest price you can, rather than go and ask them for advice.
Other option is Funan IT Mall.

If you want to get an idea of the prices before you get here, have a look at:
http://videopro.com.sg/
They are at Sim Lim, and are who I used. There are plenty of other places to comapre, but many of them don't have decent websites listing their prices - but Video Pro do.
Be aware you should be able to get discounts for cash, or for larger purchases.

Good luck!

So you really want to have to send parts back overseas for warranty?

If there are respective service centres in New Zealand, I don't see how it is not possible to pass on any warranty issues to them?

Chiefnz: I think Lowyat Plaza would be the place to go in KL: http://www.backpackingmalaysia.com/things-to-do/plaza-low-yat-tech-mall/kuala-lumpur. They even have an online forum too: http://forum.lowyat.net/

Cheers :)

Yup, still there. You may like to visit Funan Centre in North Bridge Road as well while you're there.

Singapore should be a much better place to shop for Computer items than KL.

Most manufactures do not have agreements with NZ vendors to warranty parallel imported product.

Why would a local PC Vendor want to warranty your Mobo? warranty is time consuming, a pain in the arse and costly.

My thoughts are, if you are only there for a short holiday, get a few parts, DONT buy a complete system...I would look for parts that have big tags or products that have a bigger market than here, therefore give a better deal....CPU, GPU, SSD and NAS Products...maybe large LCD (26+)

Why not try Pantip Plaza in BKK? It has a great selection of cheap cheap software that will pay for your trip several times over.
I got SAP r/3 there once (just to see if it would work, it kinda did, deleted now).

Of course I am not recommending you buy pirate software that would be illegal and naughty. This from someone who has bought ms office legally 3 times!!! (Bloody idiot).

Nah BKK is out... as our trip starts there and we'll be doing some jungle trekking before evenutally heading to Singapore over the next 14 days. I will be wanting to travel light so we're leaving the shopping until we reach KL and SIN.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Looks like I will be heading to simlim square.

Thanks,

Good choice. Sim Lim Square is located at 1 Rochore Canal Road, junction of Bencoolen St/Rochore Canal Road. HERE (http://www.simlimsquare.com.sg/getting) is how to get there. Navigating your way around Singapore is easy. Just be ready for the hot and humid climate, otherwise it is such a nice place!

It is also worthwhile to pay Funan Centre (http://www.funan.com.sg/find.htm) a visit. It is only about 5 minutes walk from where I worked - High Street Centre (http://sg.pagenation.com/sin/High%20Street%20Centre_103.8491_1.29.map)

Have a great time.
